International Join Studio in Urban Planning 2018 between UNDIP-RU-UGM

International Join Studio in Urban Planning is the second year of collaborative program between three universities: Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, Institute for Management Research, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, with Master of Regional and Urban Development, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Diponegoro University and Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning, Department of Architecture and Planning, Gadjah Mada University. The event was held on 9-13 April 2018 in Semarang with the theme "Participatory-Based Urban Regeneration". Join the studio was attended by 15 students of Radboud University (team coordinator: Dr. D. Ary A. Samsura and Prof. Erwin van der Krabben), 10 students of Gajah Mada University (team coordinator: Prof. Bhakti Setiawan) and 9 students of Diponegoro University (team coordinator: Dr. Fadjar Hari Mardiansjah, ST, MT, MDP, Dr. Wiwandari Handayani, ST, MT, MPS and Dr.-Ing Ir Wisnu Pradoto, MT.

This join studio aims to understading and analyzing the key issues of a particular topic in the planning area, proposing the concept of participatory-based urban, regeneration in the planning area and creating an experience of global partnership in urban planning studio.

On the first day (9/4/18), a welcoming ceremony was held at the Theater room of MPWK Undip and continued with a public lecture delivered by Prof. Erwin van der Krabben with the topic 'How can we make the planning system more adaptive?'. Through this material, Prof. Erwin describes climate change and the Netherlands Government policies on adaptive planning. On this occasion, he also mentioned the land tenure system and how to increase the land value in urban areas.

After the public lecture, the join studio participants visit Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Semarang City Office and at the same time get a public lecture from the government of Semarang City.

On the following day (10/4/18)  held a public lecture delivered by Dr. D. Ary A. Samsura, Prof. Dr. Sander Meijerink and Dr. Fadjar Hari Mardiansjah, ST, MT, MDP with a moderator of Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani.

On the first occasion, the material delivered by Dr. D. Ary A. Samsura from Radboud University. He brought the material with the topic "A Game Theory Approach In Urban Regeneration". He said that development process can be involved by community, government, and private sectors.  Each of these parties carries their own interests and implies the decisions to be taken. It takes a process of negotiation in decision making that can accommodate various interests. The concept of the Game theory is considered to be instrumental in reducing conflicts in complex planning. Game theory is using mathematical modeling in managing various conflict variables so that the decision or the best and the right policy on the complexity.

The second material delivered by Prof. Dr. Sander Meijerink Radboud University with the topic "The City Governance of Climate Adaptation: A Framework for Developing". Prof. Sander presented about the Netherland government's efforts in dealing with climate change. The Netherland governments have a program called Delta Programme. The aim of the program is to ensure that their flood risk management, water supply, and spatial planning will be resistant to climate change. They are making plans to this end in the Delta Programme, in collaboration with various authorities and other organizations.

The last material delivered by Dr. Fadjar Hari Mardiansjah, ST, MT, MDP from Diponegoro University. On this occasion, he delivered the topic "Urban Regeneration in Semarang". In this session, he explained about the development of Semarang City and the city/regency around Semarang in some period of time. He also explained the division of the order level of Semarang City and inter-regional relation in Semarang. Then he also explained about the related 'Urban Regeneration' within the study area in Kaligawe Village.

At the afternoon,  the participants held a field trip to the planning area, Kaligawe. At this field visit, the participants conducted FGD (Focus Group Discussion) with the community and stakeholders.

On the next day (11/4/18), the participants conducted a field study with observations and interviews with the surrounding community. Students are divided into groups according to the topics. This field study lasts from morning to evening. The participants also visit the historic area in Semarang, The Old City of Semarang.

Then on the next day (12/4/18), a workshop and presentation preparation was held. In this activity, the participants discussed and prepared the presentation. The results of field activities that have been done previously summarized to be presented the next day.

The last day of join studio (13/4/18) is a very important day. On this day the participants presented the results of the study in the field. After the presentation, the join studio program officially closed. To complete the join studio, the participants were invited to visit Kandri to see 'urban farming' and Kreo Cave.
